Suggested walk through the Borrowdale valley... higher and lower routes possible. Walk down the valley from Honister stopping at Grange if the tea shop is still open. Select low or medium walks depending on weather. Generally easy walking but rough underfoot. Gentle downhill with some easy inclines. Walk ends back in Keswick having walked around western side of Derwentwater. Lovely views all day provided the weather is agreeable. Approx. 14km????

BeBeebee66 on 07/10/24 @ 14:06Beebee66: Saturday 2nd is also possible depending on response. 😀
Wild Adventuress on 07/10/24 @ 15:35Diary's pretty full but would like to- N.
SMSaltyMcSaltface on 07/10/24 @ 18:41perhaps i could do Saturday 2nd but I have a medical appointment on the 1st
JohnH on 07/10/24 @ 18:50It sounds lovely Penny. I'm sorry that I work Saturdays.
KTKath_T on 07/10/24 @ 18:57Are you planning to use the bus ?
gogoing4gold on 07/10/24 @ 20:56going4gold: yes. Bus up to Honister, then walk back to Keswick.
on 07/10/24 @ 22:39JohnH: maybe I should see which day suits most. I'm free Friday to Sunday but this weekend is the last chance to make use of the Honister Rambler bus this year.
on 07/10/24 @ 22:42Kath_T: may be Friday or Saturday depending on which date suits most!
on 07/10/24 @ 22:46SaltyMcSaltface: be good to see you if you do find time. Which day would suit best if you can make it, Friday or Saturday?
Wild Adventuress on 07/10/24 @ 22:50Friday and Saturday , even Sunday as well would be good and make the long journey worthwhile.
PhPhiltheetiler on 07/10/24 @ 23:30Philtheetiler: I was just considering another lower level route for Saturday! Again to enjoy the autumn colours. I'll post my suggested second route tomorrow!
on 07/10/24 @ 23:40Saturday walk suggestion... lower level walk starting Grasmere, along footpaths and bridle paths via Rydal and Elterwater, stopping at Chesters by the River for tea then around edge of Loughrigg to Ambleside. Bus back via Grasmere. I'd be catching bus from Keswick to Grasmere then back from Ambleside. Lovely views over tarns and woodlands. A bit of a zig zag route but chosen for lovely views all day across tarns and woodlands to the fells. Some inclines but no serious mountain climbs. Both walks can be done based in Keswick using public transport.
Wild Adventuress on 07/10/24 @ 23:50Friday and/or Saturday is fine, will confirm nearer the time. Low level routes 👍
waLezW on 09/10/24 @ 4:29Sounds lovely but I'm tied up that weekend. Free the following one.
Kurly Karl on 10/10/24 @ 20:53LezW: yes lower level routes, no mountain tops. I'm still recovering from my knee injury. There are so many beautiful low level walks in the Lakes to enjoy!
on 11/10/24 @ 10:02Kurly Karl: Honister bus stops for the winter this weekend hence the dates chosen! Sorry you can't make it.
Wild Adventuress on 11/10/24 @ 10:03Just to advise, I am staying in the Braithwaite Village campsite as the Keswick ones had no availability for arrival on the 31st. For planning purposes I will use the X5 bus to get to Booth's and can arrive at 07:43 / 08:14 / 09:14 / 10:14 etc. I am fine with early morning starts but you choose the time to suit the other parties. Cheers
waLezW on 23/10/24 @ 13:26(and the bus times are the same for the Saturday walk)
LezW: thanks for the confirmation and bus times! I'm just away walking the Dale's Way this week but will sort start times for Sat and Sunday when I get home!
Wild Adventuress on 23/10/24 @ 19:59LezW: Hi, I'm coming down for the Saturday walk only since I have a hopital appointment on the Friday morning. That's funny about the sites as Braithwaite Village was full for the Friday but I got the Keswick site OK for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday 🤔
JohnH on 24/10/24 @ 9:08See you on the Saturday
Wild Adventuress: OK, enjoy. You mention 'Sat and Sunday' I hope I have not got the dates wrong as the walk Title shows 'Autumn colours in Borrowdale from Keswick- Fri 1st' Nov 2024
on 24/10/24 @ 14:03? with second walk on Saturday.
JohnH: I had to take the 'Super Service' pitch, all the other hardstandings were gone, not the first time for that as Keswick is always a difficult place for short notice pitch bookings. See you Saturday.
waLezW on 24/10/24 @ 14:21LezW: I know about Braithwaite as I tried there first, however, not with any expectation on Wednesday morning of this week both SheilaB and me were able to book into the Keswick site for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights, I was really surprised that we got the pitches at such short notice, see you on Saturday.
JohnH on 24/10/24 @ 19:37LezW: whoops I mean Friday and Saturday!!
on 24/10/24 @ 21:17I'm shattered. Day 3 24 miles and very boggy!!
Bus times...
on 27/10/24 @ 21:15Keswick bus station outside Booths
Friday 77A bus at 9.20amto Honister. I'll need to check this later in the week as due to flood damage this bus is turning round at Seatoller rather than up at Honister Mine. It is supposed to be back to normal on 28th.
Saturday 2nd Nov. Keswick bus station
555 Bus which stops at Grasmere leaving Booths at 0830am. An earlier start to make sure we get bus back from Ambleside at a reasonable time.
Return bus times at least every hour eg. 1622, 1652, 1722, 1829....
Weather may change nearer the end of the week but presently both days overcast.
If anyone needs breakfast, Booths do a takeaway breakfast bap and coffee or tea for £4 from the fish and cheese, counter at the back of the store left side or have a cafe offering all sorts of breakfast choices. The cafe is adjacent to the bus stops so you can see when buses come in!
on 28/10/24 @ 8:01Booths also do meal deal take away food, main and 2 snacks plus drink £6 just inside store entrance (actually may be £5?)
Wild Adventuress on 28/10/24 @ 8:05Wild Adventuress: Buses - Acknowledged, I will be there.
on 28/10/24 @ 9:06Wild Adventuress: and I would like to add my phone number in case of any last minute issues - 07484195302
waLezW on 28/10/24 @ 9:10What sort of time do you anticipate finishing? Depending on how long my hospital appointment lasts in the morning I could get down to Keswick by early afternoon, then I could walk down the West side of Derwentwater to meet you finishing. Then perhaps, coffee and cakes 😋
JohnH on 28/10/24 @ 11:41LezW: similarly mine 07484620384
on 28/10/24 @ 18:13JohnH: hi John
Wild Adventuress on 28/10/24 @ 18:16Well it isn't a long walk but if we add in say castle crag we may take longer. There is Lingholm cafe in the wood before Portinscale or the Chalet in Portinscale or else we may need to think about a drink and or food in Keswick at the end. No idea about times so contact us on the day?! If decent weather may go to the dark sky event in Crow Park in evening. Just let us know your whereabouts!!
Thanks for the bus times info-
SMSaltyMcSaltface on 28/10/24 @ 18:47Is Booths the meeting point both days?
Nick.
Wild Adventuress: I'll drop youi a message once I know when I'll get to Keswick and we can take it from there
JohnH on 28/10/24 @ 21:01SaltyMcSaltface: Hi Nick
on 28/10/24 @ 23:19Yes we're catching buses from Keswick. I'll be walking over from Portinscale both mornings.
JohnH: 👍
on 28/10/24 @ 23:21SaltyMcSaltface: if you are in camper you can park in no through road to Portinscale leading to pedestrian suspension bridge. Will be walking to Booths this way. Great you can make it!
Wild Adventuress on 28/10/24 @ 23:25Wild Adventuress: Thank you! I'd seen that parking online, good to have confirmation it's OK. I'll use it Thurs evening, possibly Friday too.
SMSaltyMcSaltface on 29/10/24 @ 8:46SaltyMcSaltface: Cumbria CC put up no overnight parking signs after Covid but these have long since vanished and there have been loads of campers using this road this summer.
on 29/10/24 @ 15:15Will pick you up on the way past!
It now looks as though the Honister road is clear. The bus at 9.20am actually comes from Keswick back to Portinscale to Grange on West Side of Lake so we could catch it in Portinscale at 7.26am instead of walking round to Keswick. But that might complicate matters if anyone else decides to turn up at last minute so think we'll leave as is and meet at Booths in Keswick
Wild Adventuress on 29/10/24 @ 15:50Hi, I’m planning to meet up with you for the Friday walk. I’ll be at the bus stop at Booth for the 9.20 bus. I’m looking forward to it. Mac 😁
MaMac on 29/10/24 @ 16:01Mac: great we'll see you at Booths am bus to Honister on Friday 😀
Wild Adventuress on 29/10/24 @ 22:19Change of plans for me, I won't be joining these walks (Fri / Sat). Hope you all have a good time. Cheers
waLezW on 30/10/24 @ 11:48LezW: ah OK! Thanks for letting me know. See you another time maybe?
